The chivalric code set a standard for military discipline and virtue so powerful that it still influences our modern militaries today. It required a lifetime of commitment to not only mastering the art of war, horsemanship, and melee, but completely committing to religious and personal virtue. A knight was not simply a warrior, but rather a beacon of light in a dark and dangerous world: he could not fail in any aspect of his character or he would be disgraced.

Today, elements of the knighthood remain. In countries like England, men and women are still knighted for extraordinary service to the country. In America, multiple orders with histories rooted in European heritage remain in the military to honor those who go above the call of duty.

More importantly, however, the standard of behavior remains. A man or woman in uniform must help those in need, no matter the cost. Our officers are not only expected to lead troops in combat, but to be “Ladies and Gentlemen” in and outside of the uniform. And true commitment to “the code” is shown when the men and women of the U.S., U.K., Canadian, and Australian forces routinely put themselves in harm’s way to preserve human life when they could easily and with good conscience engage the enemy more aggressively and reduce personal risk if they did not.

The visage of an armored knight brings to mind many modern images: soldiers taking fire while carrying a wounded Iraqi boy to safety, Marines placing themselves between insurgent gunfire and cowering civilians rather than finding cover, a medic placing an IV to an Afghani girl in the middle of a firefight. No matter the image, no matter the instance, the code lives on in the men and women of the Armed Services.
